Ashford History Weekend
Enjoy a luxury a two-night stay at The Lodge Ashford Castle while taking in four enthralling talks by David McCullagh, Turtle Bunbury, Flor MacCarthy and Caitríona Perry who will explore the theme of Irish-American history.
Starting on Friday evening and extending across Saturday, the talks and discussions will be hosted in the intimate setting of the castle’s private cinema and feature:
- Dr David McCullagh will explore America’s role in the life and career of Éamon de Valera and the political and financial support he was afforded to help him in his defeat of his rivals
- Turtle Bunbury, whose talk will focus on the Irish diaspora from the early missionaries through to convicts, imperialists, emigrants, famine refugees and political activists
- Flor MacCarthy’s talk will include highlights from her book The Presidents' Letters, an Unexpected History of Ireland, which will include details and insights of President Ronald Reagan’s stay at Ashford Castle
- Caitríona Perry: From Kennedy to Trump, Irish Americans have long played a pivotal role in US politics. Via live link to the castle, Caitríona will look at the power wielded by the Irish at the highest levels of US politics in her talk ‘stars, stripes and shamrocks, the Irish influence in US politics’.
